Born in Portugal, Odeceixe, in 1983, Maria Lucia Cruz Correia graduated in Graphic Design, in 2006 from ESAD- Escola Superior de Artes e Design (PT). Later in 2010, a post master in Advanced Performance and Scenography studies, A.PASS ( BE), and in 2012 she enrolled Transmedia postgraduate program in arts, media and multimedia, luka (BE)
Correia's is based in Belgium, therefore most of her works have been presented in belgian territory , namely Budakunscentrum, Beursschouwburg, STUK, Vooruitkunstcentrum, Verbeke Foundation and recently Kaaitheater. However she has worked internationally with Cultivamos Cultura (PT), Performancespace, (UK), Performerstammtisch, (DE) amongst others.
Correia's artwork is characterized by environmental awareness, often involving collaborations with professionals outside of art circles, most notably scientists and activists. Drawing upon the contemporary studies on political ecology, change takes center stage in her work: in her search for utopian horizons, she proposes actions that merge clinical questions about the human condition. Thus she enhances the processes of interconnectivity between human kind and natural world in order to to contribute towards the transformative potentials of the social.
Two of her projects, hosted since 2013 by the Vooruit Kunscentrum in Gent, have also been the most significant so far: “1 place and 14400 seconds” and “Urban Action clinic” have been informed by activism and participatory performance in public space to the extent that allowed Correia to create her own, autonomous working platform through which some concrete tactics of communal development successfully combine with the radical approaches towards the concepts of social healing, coexistence and sharing.
